I… I….just… finished reading it and the twist at the very end just blew my mind! I definitely was not expecting that! This book is kind of like coffee, good to the very last drop! Alright, let me start off with the fact the writing style is addicting! When I first read the title of this book, I must say I wasn’t all that interested. At least not at first. This book has nothing to do with a hairy spider and by all means has nothing to do with good ol’ spider man. As it says in the blurb, “From the cobweb-choked ruins of a lost city in the Amazon emerges a gold spider statue with flashing emerald eyes. If the legends are true, the gold spider has the power to erase the past . . . change the future . . . perhaps even grant eternal life. But touching the spider will steal your memories -- and then your life.” This caught my attention. It practically sells the book! Though the full blurb is a bit unsatisfying, this book is fast paced, thrilling, smooth and beautifully written. The very beginning captures you, takes you in and won’t let you go. I’m full of as many questions as the character, Ash, is. This book reeks of nonstop talent. This author is incredible! The words and how they’re put together is simply brilliant. As I’m reading this, my stress level is picking up. I feel like I am Ash. The things being discovered as the story unwinds has me uneasy. I want to know more. Putting this book down is not an option!
This story isn’t boring, at all. The character build up is amazing for Ash, since the character learns about himself as the reader learns about him. Ash, has lost his memory and is trying to retrace his steps and, under the circumstances, he is figuring things out while constantly risking looking death in the face. He doesn’t know who to talk to, who to trust, what he did and who he did wrong to. His recent decisions are putting him in a constant life or death situation and quite frankly he has no idea why. He’s out for answers and he’s in a rush to get them. It’s easy to see that he has such a big heart, despite the mistakes that he’s made. His only real goal in life is to set things straight while protecting the ones he loves, mainly his brother.
Now, let’s discuss Cleo! She’s a badass that seems to be by the book (legally). She has full faith in the law and how it works. She seems to be at the right place at the right time. Cleo seems to be the hero to the story. She comes in when Ash needs her the most. They seem to have quite a past, which explains a little why she ends up at the right place at the right time. Though, something seems off about Cleo. I can’t exactly put my finger on it. Every time she talks, the more I want to shake more information out of her! It’s like she is starting to say something important and then stops. I want to yell, “Keep saying words!”
Ash’s brother. This poor guy, Mauricio, is caught up in the middle of his brother’s decisions. He sounds completely supportive the whole time until you learn why he’s so supportive. Mauricio has that older brother vibe where he wants to protect Ash no matter the cost. Funny thing is, Ash is the same way with him. They both put each other first and try to do what they think is best for each other. After losing their parents, they are all they have left. With how the first book in the series ends, I am dying to know what happens after what Mauricio accidentally finds out. This book was way beyond better than what I had expected!
